Frequently Asked Questions to a Dog Groomer

“Why should I groom my dog or puppy?”

Grooming is essential to your dog as it will avoid the coat getting matted which can be very painful. There are natural oils in the coat and skin which are released by brushing which will in turn improve the coat and the overall look of your dog. It is best to introduce grooming to your dog at the puppy stage.

Grooming also relaxes your dog and helps with its well-being.

“Do you groom puppies?”

I offer a free, one-on-one puppy introduction service where I will get to know your dog, while your dog becomes familiar with my salon, before a second appointment to groom is made.

“Where are you located?”

My home-based salon is in the town of Soham which is seven miles from Ely, eight miles from Newmarket and twenty miles from Cambridge. Soham has many shops and supermarkets close by meaning you can drop your dog off and go shopping or have a coffee while you wait.

“How much is dog grooming?”

Dogs come in all shapes, sizes and hairiness! So please contact me for a personalised dog grooming estimate. To give you an indication, smaller dogs start at approximately £30 and larger can be up to £60.

“What services do you offer?”

As well as dog grooming, I also offer nail cutting, ultrasonic teeth cleaning, clipping, hand stripping, deshedding for double-coated dogs and bathing.

“Which type of dogs do you groom?”

All well-behaved dogs are welcome, and I groom an extensive range of dogs from Cockapoos to Spaniels and from Pugs to Cross Breeds.

“Will you crate my dog?”

Your dog or puppy will be well and truly pampered and will not be crated during its time in my salon. I believe I offer a genuinely personal service on a one-on-one basis.

“How to groom a dog?”

Similar to cutting your own hair, it is not as easy as you may think, at least we sit in a hairdressers’ or barbers chair patiently, where our pets are not as easy… so patience and the right tools are very, very important.

If you wanted to bathe your own dog, you should wash him/her with lukewarm water before applying any shampoo. It is very important to avoid the ears, eyes and mouth, and it is best to towel dry as everyday hairdryers can be far too hot.

If a long or wool coated dog is left with a wet coat it can cause matting, so brushing whilst wet is very important.

It is also important to ensure that all the shampoo is removed from the dog, as it can strip the skin of essential oils. A good brushing or combing afterwards can really help.

“Do Dogs Groom themselves?”

Unlike their Not-So-Best-Friends (cats), dogs do not tend to groom themselves. In fact, in most cases, if a dog is seen licking their paws or coat, it can indicate an irritation.

“How long does dog grooming take?”

As they come in all shapes and sizes, with all types of coat and conditions, every dog is groomed on a case by case basis.

Typically, a small dog can be an hour, and a very matted large dog can take up to three.
